Celebrating 5 years in Business!

I never managed 3 in a job – so that's quite an achievement for my coaching business!
18 months into former jobs I’ve gotten bored as new exciting challenges fade and I’m left with a feeling of ‘is this it?’
8 years ago I gave up my diplomatic status and civil service career as the UK Economist for Somalia, to test the theory that business could be a force for good in Africa.
5 years ago, that theory proved after (almost) 3 years managing Intrepid’s Africa Directorate, I knew there was a more impactful place I could be than managing 4 businesses.
If I was in the ear of hundreds of good leaders, how much impact would be possible through them?
Transitioning from Civil Servant to 4X Company Director in 2017 I struggled on alone at first, leading my team of 200, turning around 4 businesses, expanding sales, improving profitability, and accelerating impact, slowly but surely.
My workaholic tendencies were on steroids, working for a company I loved, with a strong aligned mission, great people, and so much opportunity for doing good in the world.
And I spent most of my time working from planes and airports, staying in B&Bs and pulling 12-hour days to accommodate the workload between calls with the US and Australia…
My mental and physical health depended on it, as did my team’s.
“If you can’t do it for you, do it for your team” a phrase I often use with clients.
I felt like I was working too much, yet it was never enough.
I wanted to be recognised for my efforts, yet it never came.
I was impatient for results and restless for new challenges, yet only the frustrating ones persisted.
I was surrounded by people who told me “yes”, yet felt quite alone with my responsibilities.
Sound familiar?
I partnered with a coach who supported me to lead my team, improve my businesses, strengthen my professional relationships, and ultimately, improve my confidence in myself as a leader.
5 years ago I knew I couldn’t be the only leader so driven by purpose and passion I was working too hard, worrying too much, thus limiting my potential for joyful, easeful impact.
There must be others thinking: “it shouldn’t be this hard”
So I set up Lead Powerful Impact to be in the ear of good leaders, helping them:
Achieve more growth and success
Feel more ease and less stress
Transform professional relationships
Enjoy their work and life to the full
Accelerating their positive impact
Because that’s what I wanted.
Turned out I wasn’t alone in that.
Huge thanks to all the purpose-driven leaders who’ve trusted me with their leadership, businesses and teams over the past 5 years; achieving more success without the stress.
And to all my peers, coaches, mentors and friends who ensured I haven’t gone it alone - we really don’t need to, we’re better together.
The secret to my success in marking 5 years in business?
As my first business coach told me:
“Most people don’t start, most of those stop, so if you start and don’t stop, you’ll be more successful than 95% of people”
To that, along with surrounding yourself with good people and getting a coach, I’d now add:
“Have fun with it!”
That’s what helps stay in the game amid the challenges, failures, and rejections, because let’s be honest, there’s been a few.
Here’s to another five years of fun, experimentation, exciting challenges and massive impact!
Oh and plenty more exploration – I didn’t have a cake so I stuck my “5” candle in a sand dune during storm Nuria… exhilarating and exfoliating at the same time!
